Possible Images
- I took these images in my house, the black and white image was taking against a white wall in my front room and the images against the brick graffitied wall were taken in my garage.
- I used my little sister as a model for my images, i dressed her and did her makeup to represent her as an edgy young artist. Lucy is 14 year old with a slim figure and mid length blonde hair.
- The images were taken in the first few days of October 2013.
- Her outfit was bought all from the summer range from the popular high street store Top shop. They were popular items of clothing amongst the primary target audience because they were bold and fun, I choose to style her in the neon yellow cami top because it fit with the colour scheme of my magazine which was neon colours and black and also because it is stereotypical of a teenager. Denim shorts are also conventional of teenagers and young women and are worn all year round, I liked this pair because they were not too revealing so it was acceptable to be used as a main cover image but emphasised the models assets creating lust from the secondary target audience of males and envy from the primary target audience of women. A gold chain, also from topshop, is also visible on two of the images. I liked this chain because it carried the representation of rebellion as they are often linked with charvers, who live breaking rules. It is also a strong fashion statement which portrays strength.
- My resources were very limited as I am not a photographer so my images were taken on my IPhone 5 and I did not have access to professional lighting so my Images were taken under bulb lighting and two with the use of my flash. It was light outside so there may be slight influence from day light from a window. However my garage is very dark and the bulb light is not very bright so the images look very dark and dull, I liked this outcome because it fits with the rebellious tone I wanted to achieve from the magazine as it connotes the 'darker side of life' and could also represent that the target audience prefer the nightlife rather than daytime.
- Lucy is using the invitational facial expression in a majority of the images but also uses the chocolate box in others. One common feature is that she is creating direct eye contact with the reader which creates interaction and will draw them in.

Flat Plans For My Magazine
This is my draft for my front cover, the first thing I decided was that I wanted my mast head printed in capital letters and that wanted it to be in a bright colour, this is because i wanted it to be a main feature of the page and have as much emphasis on it as possible. Bold writing connotes strength and importance which is what exactly the tone I want to create. I then decided that i wanted my barcode, issue number, price and month in the bottom corner because although they are important I did not want them to draw in the readers attention instantly. This is a typical convention of magazines which I learned when doing my research. The next thing I did was add a box for where I was going to place my sub headings/articles, I used the stereotypical convention of left side third for this. After this is placed my main cover story, by putting it central across the middle of the page and overlapping the main image I am hoping to draw a lot of the readers focus to it and therefore incite them to purchase the magazine. I then added a tagline underneath the cover-line because it creates opportunity to further capture the primary target audiences attention and encourage them to purchase the magazine. Finally, after looking at my research and analysis of other magazines covers I decided to place a footer which provides space for extra information at the bottom of the page and a plug which creates interaction with the audience and allows them to feel more involved with the magazine and its contents.
For my contents page I to decided to carry the house style of my front cover through by using the same caps lock and bold font to write 'contents' and I then made the next decision to place the slogan directly underneath this masthead because they link together well and emphasis' the message and tone of the magazine. I also decided that I wanted to include anchorage onto this page and include images of famous dance artists in order to highlight the fact that it is a dance music magazine. Then I decided to include 'message from the editor' in a feature box because this is a common convention of magazines and because it gave me a chance to explain my choices etc to the reader, which again created further interaction. The page uses many different subheadings to show the article names and uses fillers underneath to fill empty space and provide the audience with extra information.
My
double page spread took a lot of consideration but in the end I decided to
dedicate a full page to an image of the famous artist with a pull quote next to
it to make the readers want to read the article. I then wanted to carry on the
house style from the 2 other pages so I included an arrow at the top of the
page which is the same as i want to use on the contents page. I want my article
to take over the full page and my image to be very dominant on the the opposing
page. I wanted to use a pull quote with the reversed out text on it to draw
attention to it and capture the audience if they are simply flicking through
the page. I am using many different typical conventions on this spread
including a standfirst, main body text, drop quotes, images and picture credits
because they are exepect by the audience and ensure that the page looks
proffesional. I also plan on using a drop shadow on either the masthead or the
image to add emphasis.
Double Page Spread Analysis
All double page spreads are set out diffrently
depending on the style of artist that is being represented, for example the
Nicki Minaj article has a completely different house style and layout in
comparison to the represntation of Lilly Allen. There is still a few
conventions that are commonly found on all of the double page spreads is pull quotes which highlight important
pieces of information and draw in readers, the writing is normal wrote in a
colum style in order to guide the readers through the article. I will use this in my own article because i want to ensure that the readers know how to read it. It is also a typical convention for the spread to include drop letters which start of the article, This helps to indicate clearly that the article is begging.

Music Artists Linked With Dance Music
all of these artists have made a name for themselves as dance artists, they are very popular throughout the genre and have had massive success. As part of my research I have listened to their hit songs and listened to multiple other artists because I wanted to take influence from the lyrics, beats and most importantly the music videos. This will help me create a magazine which fully and successful represents the genre and appeals to the target audience. The videos showed me how diverse the genre is and that it is a good idea to be original and fun with the magazine because it would be very un-conventional to be simple.

Contents Page Analysis
On all three of the contents pages I looked at they used very common teqniques such as ancourage, numerical lists and emphasis on the issue number/date. Prominent features was the use of famous artists as the article names as this would draw in the readers and make it recognisable for them they also mainly used reverse out to draw attention to the main articles and interesting images to keep readers entertained. Another thing that became apparent to me was the fact that the house style from the front cover was carried through onto this page inorder to ensure readers that they are still looking at the same magazine and also for any consistant readers they will recognise the house style. It is important to carry a constant theme.
Front Cover Analysis
One of the major conventions I picked up on is that all of the artists are makin a direct form of eye contact with the audience which draws them in and personalises the cover for them. I feel that if the model was not looking at the camera the magazine wouldn’t have such an appeal to any possible readers and would also look boring. As well as this all of the artists on the main image over laps the masthead, this highlights the importance of them and draws readers In because it emphasises the artist. Another common convention is that within the main coverline, the artists name is always the most prominent feature of the page which helps to draw the reader in and shows instantly who the main person in the magazine is. Other simple conventions that I have picked up on is left side third where the main prominance of coverlines is printed on the left hand side, the price and barcode are placed at the bottom as they are less important and the mast head is always at the top of the page. I have also learned that it is important to carry a good house style throughout the page so it looks pleasant on the eye and is easy to read/understand. I will apply all of this to my magazine in order to make it look proffesional and help it stand out on a rack of other magazines.

My Target Audience
Age Range- 13-25
Enjoy listening too Dance/Deephouse music
Primary- Females
Secondary- Males
Audience Code D
Majority Students who are part time employed or unemployed.
Pie Chart Of Dance Music Audience
For this pie chart I questioned 50 people aged from 10 to 60. I did this because i felt it would be useful for my magazine as I could clearly see who the most appropriate audience for a magazine with the genre of dance. It shows that a majority of people who listen to dance music are aged between 13-25 with them being 68% of the chart. From this I can see that my primary target audience selection was correct and emphasises that there would be an audience for my magazine. Another thing which can be deciphered from this chart is that Dance is a wide spread genre enjoyed by people of all ages, which tells me that there could be a secondary target audience of older generations.

Magazine Proposal
The genre of my music magazine is going to be a dance and popular music magazine. I have chosen these two genres because I feel that they appeal most to people within my target age range and that more people would buy a magazine of this type. In the magazine I will have a front cover, a contents page and a 2 page spread with a big music artist of the time. My two page spread will be an interview with the big music artist that will provide the reader with an insight to there life and music but will also include images that think with the text to draw in the customers attention.
Any images I include in my
magazine will be taken by me to avoid copy write etc. For my magazine I will
need images of an artist that would appeal to my target audience, the ideas I currently
have is taking am image of my friend who had a DJ set etc while he is
performing at a party, if I can not get this I intend to use my younger sister
and take images of her posing as if she was a big artist on a photo shoot.
Other images I may want is a group of teenagers enjoying the music which I would
take of my friend and also of other artists on stage which I could get of my
phone through previous concerts I have been to.
My target audience would be
working class teenagers aged between 13-25 as that the age group I have
questioned but also because that is what I fall into and I believe that I have a
good knowledge of what this target audience would expect from a music magazine.
One major factor of my target audience is that they enjoy listening to dance
and popular music because that is the kind of magazine genre I am making, I
would also like to appeal to both male and female customers but with a primary
target audience of female. My secondary target audience would be males because
this creates a wider mass market. They would both fit into the audience code D.
This group of people is usually unemployed students and working class students.
My magazine will be original
because I believe there is a large gap I the market currently for my genre of
magazine and because I will be using original images and artists that will make
it different to current magazines. The people in my magazine will be
represented as modern and current, they will be wearing current fashions which
will be relatable to my target audience because they may wear the same styles
of clothes etc.
My main feature article will
be a double page spread about an up and coming DJ that has just came into the
charts. It will feature an interview with him asking questions about his music
career, how his life has changed and other things along the same lines, it will
also include an exclusive for my magazine only to intrigue my target audience
into buying the magazine. I will ensure that it looks professional by using
typical magazine connotations such as an image of the main artist overlapping
the heading and try to avoid using word art etc.
Before I make my magazine I
will carry out research into current magazines in the market, make a
questionnaire for my target audience and look at current connotations of
magazines such as pull quotes etc. My magazine will be called ‘EVOLUTION’
because I believe it fits in with how my main artists have crawled up the charts
and how music is evolving. I also choose this name because I want my music
magazine to be new and current so the name fits in with how the market and
industry is evolving and growing.
Results Of My Questionaire
In order to make my magazine I had to do research into my target audience. To do this is created a questionnaire and handed it out to 20 teenagers. The following is my results.
My first question was ‘how old are you’ then I gave them four options which ranged
from ’12-14’ to ‘20+’. Every person I asked was aged between 15-17. This tells
me that the information I have gathered is from my target age range which is
good for me because it means that I will get a very good understand of what
different types of people from my primary audience like or expect in a
magazine.
My next question was ‘gender?’ which allows
me to get a deeper understanding of my target audience because I would be able
to find out what both genders like. My results showed that I questioned 11
females and 9 males which is perfect because it means that I have an almost
even range of information from both males and females.
After this I asked ‘what is your favourite
genre of music?’ and then ‘why?’. This allowed me to find out what the most
popular genre in my target audience is. My results showed that the most popular
music genre was indie rock, pop and dance. This tells me that this would be the
best genres to base my magazine around and also that there is a mass market of
different genres I could pick. Pop was the most popular genre with 7 votes
which highlights to me that it is a genre I should consider choosing. Other
styles of music that came to light were RnB, rap and hip hop which informs me
even further that people like that style of music as well as the most obvious
options.
In contrasts to my previous question, I
then asked ‘what is your least favourite genre of music and why?’ which allows
me to find out the type of music I should avoid using. My results showed that
heavy metal and death core were the 2 genres of music I should avoid basing a
magazine on. This has helped me because it has gave me a clearer idea of what
kind of genre I would like to use. Another type of music I want to avoid is
classical because 3 people stated that they did not like this genre.
Because I wanted to gather as much
information as I possibly could I decided to find out how my target audience
mainly listen to music. All options were popular meaning that they listen to it
through mobile phones, ipods, youtube and radio. The most common way my target
audience listens to music is through there mobile phones, this gives me a good
insight because it provides me with extra knowledge and means that I can use
this to my advantage in my magazine and include features such as free downloads
of songs on itunes for all buyers etc. youtube was also a popular way of
accessing music with 10 people choosing this option, 9 people said they use
their ipods and 8 said they listen to music on the radio. This tells me that
music is listened to by the mass market in many different ways and that this
can be linked to my music magazine and be used to my advantage.
The next question I asked was ‘how long do
you spend listening to music per day?’ which gave me knowledge as to how
popular music actually is throughout my audience and also how important it is.
50% of the people I asked said that they listen to music for over 6 hours a day
which emphasis to me how important music is to people aged 13 and over. In my
magazine I will use this to my advantage because it allows me to grab there
attention in my magazine by maybe including an article on how long teenagers
actually spend listening to music which will make it relatable.
Most people I asked said that they listened
to music for entertainment and enjoyment but some people said that music helps
them with other things such as motivation, keeping them calm and helping them
focus when doing work. This has provided me with further information into my
target audience and will help me make my magazine more appealing to them.
Another question I asked was how they get
their music, I gave them 3 options itunes, CD’s and illegal downloads. This was
a quantitative question because it gave me information as to then most popular
form of access was. Most people I questioned were very honest and 11 admitted
that there main way of accessing music was through illegal downloading most
likely on sites such as mp3 skull. This can become an article in my magazine
where I discuss why people choose to break the law when getting music. 8 people
said they download music from itunes and 10 said they purchase CD’s. This tells
me that all different forms of getting the music are popular.
Finally, my last question was ‘what would
attract you to buy a music magazine?’. There was a range of different answers I
for this qualitative question including bright, interesting images; good articles
that draw you in and the use of recognisable faces including interesting
celebrity's and popular bands. I will take all of this information on board and
try to apply these to my own music magazine front cover to ensure that I bring
in the audience I am trying to attract and also draw in the possible readers
attention and bring them to purchase the magazine.
