Results Of My Questionaire

In order to make my magazine I had to do research into my target audience. To do this is created a questionnaire and handed it out to 20 teenagers. The following is my results.

My first question was ‘how old are you’  then I gave them four options which ranged from ’12-14’ to ‘20+’. Every person I asked was aged between 15-17. This tells me that the information I have gathered is from my target age range which is good for me because it means that I will get a very good understand of what different types of people from my primary audience like or expect in a magazine.

My next question was ‘gender?’ which allows me to get a deeper understanding of my target audience because I would be able to find out what both genders like. My results showed that I questioned 11 females and 9 males which is perfect because it means that I have an almost even range of information from both males and females.

After this I asked ‘what is your favourite genre of music?’ and then ‘why?’. This allowed me to find out what the most popular genre in my target audience is. My results showed that the most popular music genre was indie rock, pop and dance. This tells me that this would be the best genres to base my magazine around and also that there is a mass market of different genres I could pick. Pop was the most popular genre with 7 votes which highlights to me that it is a genre I should consider choosing. Other styles of music that came to light were RnB, rap and hip hop which informs me even further that people like that style of music as well as the most obvious options.

In contrasts to my previous question, I then asked ‘what is your least favourite genre of music and why?’ which allows me to find out the type of music I should avoid using. My results showed that heavy metal and death core were the 2 genres of music I should avoid basing a magazine on. This has helped me because it has gave me a clearer idea of what kind of genre I would like to use. Another type of music I want to avoid is classical because 3 people stated that they did not like this genre.

Because I wanted to gather as much information as I possibly could I decided to find out how my target audience mainly listen to music. All options were popular meaning that they listen to it through mobile phones, ipods, youtube and radio. The most common way my target audience listens to music is through there mobile phones, this gives me a good insight because it provides me with extra knowledge and means that I can use this to my advantage in my magazine and include features such as free downloads of songs on itunes for all buyers etc. youtube was also a popular way of accessing music with 10 people choosing this option, 9 people said they use their ipods and 8 said they listen to music on the radio. This tells me that music is listened to by the mass market in many different ways and that this can be linked to my music magazine and be used to my advantage.

The next question I asked was ‘how long do you spend listening to music per day?’ which gave me knowledge as to how popular music actually is throughout my audience and also how important it is. 50% of the people I asked said that they listen to music for over 6 hours a day which emphasis to me how important music is to people aged 13 and over. In my magazine I will use this to my advantage because it allows me to grab there attention in my magazine by maybe including an article on how long teenagers actually spend listening to music which will make it relatable.

Most people I asked said that they listened to music for entertainment and enjoyment but some people said that music helps them with other things such as motivation, keeping them calm and helping them focus when doing work. This has provided me with further information into my target audience and will help me make my magazine more appealing to them.

Another question I asked was how they get their music, I gave them 3 options itunes, CD’s and illegal downloads. This was a quantitative question because it gave me information as to then most popular form of access was. Most people I questioned were very honest and 11 admitted that there main way of accessing music was through illegal downloading most likely on sites such as mp3 skull. This can become an article in my magazine where I discuss why people choose to break the law when getting music. 8 people said they download music from itunes and 10 said they purchase CD’s. This tells me that all different forms of getting the music are popular.

Finally, my last question was ‘what would attract you to buy a music magazine?’. There was a range of different answers I for this qualitative question including bright, interesting images; good articles that draw you in and the use of recognisable faces including interesting celebrity's and popular bands. I will take all of this information on board and try to apply these to my own music magazine front cover to ensure that I bring in the audience I am trying to attract and also draw in the possible readers attention and bring them to purchase the magazine.
